Most of the Aberdare Range (the highest point being ‘Lesatima’ at about 4,000m/13,120ft) falls within the confines of the Aberdare National Park, which encloses the high mountains, plus a great area of lower forest called the Salient where most of the park’s big game is found. Beyond the forest are areas of bush and open grassy moor land - an ideal place for wilderness trekking. One special feature of the region is the Karuru Waterfalls, which are the highest in Kenya plunging 273 m (895 ft) in three steps.

After each days walk, we will be met by the vehicle in the moor lands where a suitable clearing will be allocated to set up camp. If weather permits, we may also have an option of a game drive - a welcoming chance to relieve ourselves from the walking.

    Itinerary

Day 1 - Nairobi, Mweiga, Aberdare Range

We depart our office in the morning and go north to Mweiga to meet our armed ranger and then up into the forested eastern slopes of the Aberdare ranges. We trek through high moorlands through thickets of St. John’s Wort and Rosewood Glades. We overnight at Reedbuck campsite (3090m).

Day 2 - Aberdare Range (Walking)

We aim to start the walk at 7am to finish at 2pm. We walk via the Spectacular Chania Falls to Wandere Junction where we set up camp close by (3150m). Over 40 species of wildlife inhabit these mountain ranges, hiding in the heavily forested slopes and in the upper moor lands. Walking is always cool with plenty of clear trout filled mountain streams.

Our walk starts below the bamboo forest, climbing up onto the moor lands. There is always likelihood of encountering large game that may prove precarious whilst walking through the African bush but our trained and armed game ranger knows the area and habits of the game and will help us avoid such confrontations as much as possible. The Aberdares is noted as a rhino sanctuary but keep an eye out for the elusive rare bongo, which is best spotted in the upper bamboo zone and hypericum scrub.

Day 3 - Aberdare Range (Walking)

We follow Wandare’s Track and overnight at a campsite close to the Fire Spotting Station. (3,400m)

    Day 4 - Nairobi

We proceed early morning by vehicle towards the higher part of the Aberdares where we get dropped off and proceed to trek up Ol Doinyo Satima (at 4000m). Trekking is through good tropical alpine vegetation such as Lobelia and goundsel. We descend by vehicle looking for game along the way. We drop off the guide and hope to be out of the park by 4.00pm to proceed to back to Nairobi.

    Please Note:

    • The gear and crew are transferred by vehicle from camp to camp each day on some itineraries (Wild Plains and Tropical Moorlands), unless otherwise specified. However, if specially arranged, donkeys or camels can be used depending on area. Some itineraries require donkeys or camels in which case the four-wheel-drive would meet us on the last leg of the trip (Mystic Nomads and Jade Sea Journey).
    • If you are coming from overseas we can arrange transfers from and to the airport, hotel bookings, beach holidays, balloon safaris, camping and lodge safaris, overland safaris and any other activities you would like to participate in whilst in Kenya. Please enquire with our Sales team.
    • Clients should arrange to have good weatherproof clothing, a warm sleeping bag, a water bottle, good walking shoes and a comfortable pair of shoes to wear in camp.
    • Although these itineraries follow a specific routine, there may be need to alter certain days due to the pace of walking or even interference by weather conditions.
    • For Jade Sea Journey only: Due to the harsh terrain and heat, this itinerary would be best done during the rainy/”winter” season (March to May, June, July and October to November) as it is much cooler, otherwise,if done any other time of the year, walking would start before dawn to avoid walking in the afternoon when temperatures are high.
